MOSCOW, Aug. 18 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The death toll from a gunpowder explosion at a factory in the Russian region of Ryazan has increased to 20, with 134 others injured, Sputnik reported, quoting the regional crisis response centre on Monday.
Ryazan Region Governor Pavel Malkov said that a fire broke out in a production workshop at an enterprise in the Shilovsky district on Friday morning, leaving five dead and more than 100 others injured.
"As of 7:00 Moscow time (04:00 GMT) on August 18, 20 people have died in an emergency in the Shilovsky district. There are 134 injured, including 31 patients in hospitals in Ryazan and Moscow and 103 patients receiving outpatient care," the crisis response centre said on Telegram.
A search and rescue operation continues. The Russian Investigative Committee for the Ryazan Region said on Friday that a criminal probe had been opened into the blast on suspicion of violations of the industrial safety code.
