MOSCOW, Aug 21 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Israel's plan to build a major settlement in the West Bank would split Palestine in two and would be a "flagrant" violation of international law, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said.
"The UK condemns the decision by Israel’s Higher Planning Committee today to approve the E1 settlement plan. If implemented, it would divide a Palestinian state in two, mark a flagrant breach of international law, and critically undermine the two-state solution. The Israeli government must reverse this decision," Lammy said on X on Wednesday.
Israel's Kan state broadcaster reported Wednesday that the Civil Administration's committee for Judea and Samaria, which is how Israel refers to the West Bank, had approved the construction of 3,400 homes in the Mevaseret Adumim area (E1), which would link Jerusalem and Maale Adumim, thereby violating the territorial integrity of the Palestinian Authority.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday that the United Nations condemns Israel's decision to expand settlement activity in the West Bank and opposes any settlement activity in the occupied territories.
