KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s 68th National Day was commemorated in New York on Friday with a vibrant flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green Park, presided over by Consul General Norhalilah Abdul Jalil.

The Jalur Gemilang was hoisted alongside the American flag at the historic landmark beside the iconic Charging Bull, symbolising the enduring friendship between Malaysia and the United States (US).

In a statement, the Consulate General of Malaysia in New York said this year’s celebration carried added significance as Norhalilah, the first woman to serve as Malaysia’s Consul General in New York, led the ceremony, underscoring the nation’s commitment to empowering women in public service.

Among those present were New York City Mayor’s Office Commissioner for International Affairs Aissata Camara and Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Datuk Dr. Ahmad Faisal Muhamad, it added.

In her remarks, Norhalilah emphasised the spirit of Merdeka as both a celebration of independence and a reaffirmation of national unity for Malaysians abroad.

“As we raise our Jalur Gemilang alongside the Stars and Stripes in one of the most iconic sites of New York, it reminds us that Malaysia’s spirit thrives not only at home but also among the Malaysian diaspora here in the US,” she said.

Meanwhile, Camara congratulated Malaysia on its 68th National Day and reflected on the shared journey of leadership with Norhalilah.

“As the first women to hold these leadership roles, both the Consul General and I carry the responsibility of representation, and it is truly meaningful to stand together today,” she said.

She also praised the Malaysian community in New York for enriching the city’s diversity.

“New York is proud to be home to the Malaysian community, we welcome your culture, your food, and your traditions that enrich our city’s diversity.

“As we look ahead to Visit Malaysia 2026, the City of New York looks forward to working hand-in-hand with Malaysia to strengthen our friendship and foster even closer ties between our peoples," she said.

The event also showcased Malaysia’s cultural heritage through performances including a creative fusion of the traditional tarian zapin and the martial art of silat by Timmy Ong, a Malaysian artist making his mark in New York.

Bharatanatyam and a lion dance further reflected the country’s diversity, representing its Indian and Chinese communities.

As part of the celebrations, the Consulate General presented the Merdeka Community Awards to recognise members of the Malaysian community in the US for their contributions to community service and cultural preservation.

The awards aim to honour individuals who strengthen national pride abroad while fostering a sense of belonging among Malaysians overseas.

The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, New York City officials, community leaders, and the Malaysian diaspora from across the region. With over 100 participants, the ceremony was not only a moment of national pride but also a vibrant reflection of Malaysia’s cultural diversity and unity.
