MOSCOW, Sept 1 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The US host cities of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are complaining of lack of funds to finance the events, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti quoting Politico, citing local authorities.
In many cities there is growing concern about finding millions of dollars for logistics and security costs, the publication said.
The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) significantly limits the ability of local organisers to raise their own funding, it said.
The publication points out that although Congress approved US$625 million for security costs, local authorities need to find money for other expenses — up to US$150 million per city.
At least two local committees organising the championship have privately complained to FIFA about the lack of support, the publication said.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 15 to July 13. The tournament will be held for the first time with the participation of 48 national teams.
