Global South Must Unite To Solve Problems Without Superpowers - PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on countries of the Global South to strengthen unity and work together to resolve global challenges without depending on superpowers.

Anwar cited Gaza as a stark example of injustice in which innocent civilians are killed with impunity, stressing that a collective response is needed.

“Gaza is a splendid case. The whole world can complain that they will continue to kill babies, children, and women with impunity.

“So, what is the solution? The solution is to build up that Global South understanding to be able to resolve part of the problem ourselves and not to be dependent on any superpower,” he said.

He said this during an interview with Chinese broadcaster CGTN’s anchor Zheng Junfeng on the sidelines of his recent working visit to China.

Anwar noted that multilateralism is increasingly ignored by major powers, and developing countries must take the initiative to protect their own political and economic interests.

“We understand the problem, how much resolution can be passed, but it will be ignored because, unlike the understanding in the past where multilateralism is the answer, we have seen time and time again that people just should say,” he said.

The prime minister pointed to regional and global mechanisms, such as ASEAN, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and China’s initiatives, as avenues for collaboration.

“These are, I think, where we say, look, we can partly mitigate and redeem some of the contentious issues affecting us, not only in terms of global politics, but also in terms of economic interests, to protect the economic interests of these countries. Otherwise, we suffer,” he said.
