RIYADH, Sept 23 (Bernama-dpa) -- Saudi Arabia's top religious cleric, the Grand Mufti Abdulaziz al-Sheikh, who had held the position since 1999, has died, the royal court announced in a statement on Tuesday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
"The Kingdom and the Muslim world have lost a distinguished scholar, who made significant contributions in the service of science, Islam and Muslims,” said the statement, carried by the Saudi Press Agency.
The funeral prayers will be held in the capital Riyadh and other mosques across the kingdom later Tuesday, it added.
