Iran Calls For Special Meeting Of UN Nuclear Watchdog

01/03/2026 02:48 PM

VIENNA, March 1 (Bernama-dpa) -- Iran is calling for a special session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in the wake of Saturday's Israeli and US attacks on the country, reported German news agency dpa.

The request for a meeting of the IAEA's board of governors, posted in a statement on X, did not indicate whether Iranian nuclear facilities had again been hit in the latest military strikes, as had been the case last year.

The Iranian mission to the United Nations did speak of "threats" to nuclear facilities that needed to be discussed by the IAEA board.

A post from the IAEA, shortly after Iran's request, said the UN agency had "so far no evidence of any radiological impact." It would continue to monitor any nuclear safety risks in the region and urged restraint. The agency "is in permanent contact with countries in the region," it said.

The IAEA board of governors' regular spring meeting was due to begin in Vienna on Monday. Technical talks with Iran were also planned in Vienna next week, as a continuation of the recent nuclear negotiations with the United States in Geneva - but that was before the Saturday attacks.
