EU Ministers' Meeting On Cyprus Postponed After Drone Struck Uk Base

02/03/2026 09:49 PM

BRUSSELS, March 2 (Bernama-dpa) — The Cypriot government has postponed a meeting of the European Union ministers planned on Monday after a drone struck a British military base in on the Mediterranean island, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

European Union ministers in charge of European affairs were expected to meet in Nicosia for informal talks as Cyprus currently holds the rotating EU presidency.

"In the early morning hours we had a single, isolated incident of a UAV (drone) that targeted the British base in Akrotiri, Cyprus, with some limited damage," a spokeswoman for the Cypriot EU presidency said.

"The exact origin of the UAV is currently under verification, but it has been confirmed that the Republic (of Cyprus) was not the target of an attack," she said.

Given the "unanticipated development which has unfortunately impacted today’s flights to Cyprus" the meeting was postponed to a later date, the spokeswoman said.

The EU country holding the bloc's rotating presidency is in charge of chairing meetings of EU ministers in Brussels and Luxembourg, and is often also organising gatherings in the member country.

EU leaders are expected to meet in Cyprus for two days of talks in late April.
