Bangladesh Shuts Educational Institutions To Conserve Fuel And Electricity

09/03/2026 02:33 PM

DHAKA, March 9 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Bangladesh has ordered the closure of educational institutions nationwide as part of emergency steps aimed at conserving fuel and electricity amid a worsening global energy crisis linked to rising tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran.

The decision applies to both public and private universities, English-medium schools, and coaching centres, which have been instructed to halt academic activities beginning Monday, Anadolu Ajansi reported.

Authorities say the move is designed to cut electricity consumption and reduce transportation-related fuel use as global oil markets remain volatile.

Under an order issued by the Education Ministry, universities have been directed to begin their Eid al-Fitr holidays ahead of schedule, effectively shutting campuses across the country. The directive followed instructions from the Cabinet Division as part of wider efforts to curb energy demand in several sectors.

Officials said the temporary shutdown will help lower electricity use in classrooms, laboratories, dormitories, and administrative buildings, while also reducing fuel consumption associated with travel by students, teachers, and staff.

“The decision has been taken to reduce electricity and fuel consumption considering the current global situation,” the ministry said in a directive circulated to university authorities.

English-medium schools and coaching centers across Bangladesh have also been instructed to close starting Monday. Authorities believe suspending academic activities during this period will significantly cut daily energy demand, especially in urban areas where educational institutions account for a large share of daytime electricity use.

The measure comes as Bangladesh faces growing strain on its energy supply chain amid disruptions in global fuel markets tied to conflict in the Middle East. Officials say conserving electricity and fuel is critical to maintaining stable power generation and ensuring that essential services remain operational.

Alongside the closures, the government has issued guidelines encouraging institutions and offices to suse electricity more efficiently, including maximising natural daylight and minimising unnecessary lighting and power consumption.

Energy analysts say such demand-side steps can offer short-term relief for the power sector while authorities work to stabilise fuel imports and manage distribution.

However, they warn that prolonged interruptions to the academic calendar could create challenges for students if the energy crisis continues.

Authorities have not indicated how long the closures will remain in place, though institutions are expected to resume normal academic schedules after the Eid holidays if the energy situation improves.
