OSAKA, April 25 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- Survivors and families of the victims of a 2005 train derailment remembered Saturday the 107 lives lost in the accident in the western Japan city of Amagasaki, renewing their pledge to pass on lessons learned from the tragedy, Kyodo News reported.

West Japan Railway Co. hosted a memorial ceremony at the accident site in Hyogo Prefecture.

A total of 106 passengers and the train driver were killed after a rush-hour commuter train on the JR Fukuchiyama Line derailed at 9.18 am (local time) on April 25, 2005, as it entered a curved section and crashed into a condominium building, leaving 562 people injured.

While the train was travelling at a speed far exceeding the limit, the four former JR West presidents who were indicted on charges of professional negligence were acquitted.

Families of the victims have been seeking the introduction of an "organisational punishment" mechanism to penalise corporations, as companies are not held criminally liable in accidents such as this under the current judicial system.
