LOS ANGELES, May 1 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- As the United States (US) national average petrol price reached a four-year high amid global tensions, California – where prices are the highest in the nation – saw its average petrol price surpass US$6 per gallon (3.78 litres) on Thursday, reported Xinhua.
The national average rose to US$4.3 per gallon, seeing a US$0.27 hike in one week, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), a non-profit association with over 60 million members.
In a news release, AAA said that the national average is US$1.12 higher than it was this time last year, as crude oil surged above US$100 per barrel "with no indication of when the Strait of Hormuz will reopen."
"Petrol prices are the highest they've been in four years, since late July 2022," AAA added.
California posted the highest statewide average at US$6.01 per gallon on Thursday, followed by Hawaii at US$5.64 and Washington at US$5.57.
Petrol prices in Oregon and Nevada also exceeded US$5, reaching US$5.15 and US$5.12 per gallon, respectively.
