HYDERABAD, May 6 (Bernama) -- Pakistan on Wednesday welcomed United States President Donald Trump's announcement to "pause" the US military plan to help stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the US leader for his "courageous leadership and timely announcement" regarding the "Project Freedom" move.

Trump's "gracious response" to the request made by Pakistan and other countries, including Saudi Arabia, "will go a long way towards advancing regional peace, stability and reconciliation during this sensitive period", Shehbaz said in a post on X.

Trump said on Tuesday that he was putting on hold an initiative he announced on Sunday on vessel movement in the Strait of Hormuz, at the request of Pakistan and other countries, “for a short period of time to see whether or not the agreement with Iran can be finalised and signed.”

Pakistan is facilitating talks between the US and Iran to agree on a peace agreement to end the conflict that began with the US-Israeli war on Iran on Feb 28.

"Pakistan remains firmly committed to supporting all efforts that promote restraint and a peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

“We are very hopeful that the current momentum will lead to a lasting agreement that secures durable peace and stability for the region and beyond," Shehbaz said.
