08/05/2026 12:17 PM

OTTAWA, May 8 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a phone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Xinhua reported.

According to a readout released by the prime minister's office, Carney expressed Canada's deep concern over the continued humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

He also reaffirmed Ottawa's opposition to Israeli settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank, emphasising that unilateral actions undermine prospects for a lasting peace.

During the call, Carney underscored Canada's support for an independent, viable, and sovereign Palestinian state. The two leaders agreed to remain in contact, according to the readout.
