08/05/2026 07:15 PM

MOSCOW, May 8 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has decided to completely expel the Russian Union of Journalists from the organisation, chair of the Russian Union of Journalists, Vladimir Solovyov, told RIA Novosti on Friday.

In February 2023, the IFJ decided to suspend the membership of Russia in connection with "actions contrary to the principles and objectives of the Federation."

"If previously there was a freeze, then only Congress could exclude it. The Congress is currently taking place in Paris. And yesterday [at the Congress], such a decision was made to expel [Russia]," Solovyov said.

The Russian Union of Journalists was invited to the Congress but decided not to participate and sent its position in advance to international journalistic organisations, the official explained.

In the appeal, the Russian side explained the reasons for refusing to participate and also pointed out violations of the Federation's own statutory principles, Solovyov added.
