MOSCOW, May 20 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- New Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said he raised the issue of independence in talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
"I have a level of ambition for my nation where I said that I want to lead a national conversation creating that confidence in our ability, undoubtedly, to be an independent nation like so many countries like ours. But, I said to the Prime Minister … we set a journey that the people of Wales will ultimately have to decide on the trajectory and the pace of," ap Iorwerth said during his first speech in the Welsh parliament on Tuesday.
Ap Iorwerth held a telephone conversation with Starmer a few days after his Plaid Cymru party won the elections in early May.
Plaid Cymru – the Party of Wales has previously stated repeatedly that it will promote Welsh independence if it comes to power. At the same time, the party ruled out the possibility of holding a referendum on independence during the next parliamentary term.
