MOSCOW, June 9 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The United Kingdom will spend £750 million (US$1 billion) on developing a national supercomputer with artificial intelligence by 2030, the country’s science ministry said, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
"The AI Hardware Plan includes New 750 million pounds for a national AI supercomputer: One of the most advanced in the world when deployed in 2030, it will bring together proven and next-generation processors and cutting-edge chips to run complex tasks more efficiently than traditional supercomputers," the ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The supercomputer will be based at the University of Edinburgh, the statement read, adding that a tender for the project will be announced soon. According to the ministry, the computer will be equipped with a so-called heterogeneous mixed chip system using British-made chips.
The system will also "join Isambard-AI and Zenith (alongside DAWN) as part of the UK’s AI Research Resource, giving researchers, start-ups and public services the computing power they need to develop and run AI securely in Britain," the statement noted.
