OTTAWA, June 9 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Louise Arbour was officially installed as Canada's 31st governor general and commander-in-chief of the Canadian Armed Forces on Monday, reported Xinhua.

In her installation speech, Arbour, 79, expressed her commitment to showcasing Canadians' diverse voices, emphasising a desire to "learn and share."

A former justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, she once served as the UN high commissioner for human rights, as well as the chief prosecutor of the international criminal tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.

Born in Montreal, Arbour is fluent in English and French.

As a Commonwealth country, Canada has the British monarch as its head of state. The governor general acts as the monarch's representative in the country and is appointed by the monarch on the recommendation of the Canadian prime minister for a five-year term.
