HYDERABAD, June 23 (Bernama) -- Eleven vessels carrying energy and fertilisers are on their way to India after crossing the Strait of Hormuz, signalling a resumption of maritime traffic following the US-Iran truce.

The Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on June 17, reopened the Strait of Hormuz to traffic after Iran and the United States (US) agreed to a number of peace initiatives aimed at ending their hostilities.

Three of the India-bound vessels that have crossed the Strait of Hormuz are Indian-flagged oil tankers carrying 285,000 tonnes of crude each, India's Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal told a media briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The remaining foreign-flagged vessels comprise one liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker, one crude oil tanker and six bulk carriers carrying fertilisers, he said.

Many Indian-flagged vessels were stranded in the Persian Gulf region following the outbreak of the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran on February 28.

Jaiswal said 10 of these ships were still there, while two Indian ships had sailed into the region, indicating that traffic was "going back and forth".
