KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s candidate, Datuk Yasmeen Muhamad Shariff, has been elected as a member of the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Rights of the Child for the 2027–2031 term in an election held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
The Foreign Ministry said Yasmeen secured 136 votes from 189 States Parties present and voting during the 21st Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, emerging with the highest number of votes.
“This marks the second time she has been elected to the committee, having previously served as a member for the 2013–2017 term.
“This election reflects the confidence and trust of the international community in her expertise and dedication in advancing the rights and well-being of children,” the ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said in a statement on Wednesday.
As a committee member, Yasmeen will serve in her personal capacity as an independent expert.
She will contribute to the committee’s mandate of monitoring the implementation of the convention, engaging in constructive dialogue with States Parties, and promoting a rights-based approach to addressing issues affecting children globally.
“Malaysia welcomes Yasmeen’s valuable contribution to the committee’s work and to broader international efforts to ensure no child is left behind,” the statement added.
Wisma Putra said the appointment reflects international recognition of Malaysia’s continued efforts to advance children’s rights through inclusive policies, legal reforms and programmes aimed at ensuring every child can reach their full potential.
Malaysia remains committed to promoting and protecting children’s rights in line with the principles and provisions of the convention and will continue to engage constructively with all stakeholders in addressing current challenges affecting children.
It added that in today’s increasingly complex global landscape, the committee’s role remains crucial in safeguarding the rights, dignity and future of all children.
The ministry also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development for its close cooperation and continued support, which contributed to Malaysia’s successful nomination.
