TEHRAN, June 29 (Bernama-IRNA) -- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi has announced that representatives from Iran and Oman convened for the first meeting of the joint Hormuz committee, focusing on the future of the Strait of Hormuz, Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.
Referring to his trip to Oman on Monday, Gharibabadi announced on X that he met with Oman’s Ambassador-at-Large Abdulaziz Al Hinai for the inaugural meeting of the Joint Hormuz Committee.
During the meeting, officials reviewed current issues regarding the Strait of Hormuz and exchanged views on its future management.
Discussions were framed by Paragraph 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and the sovereign rights of littoral states, Gharibabadi added.
This meeting follows a June 23 statement issued by Muscat and Tehran following the visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and negotiating head Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
That statement emphasised that all arrangements concerning the Strait must fully respect the sovereignty and rights of both littoral states.
The two countries have agreed to pursue further discussions on the issue through a joint committee established by their respective foreign ministries.
The committee aims to reach a consensus on the future governance of shipping in the Strait, including service provision and associated costs, in accordance with international standards.
