KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 (Bernama) – Despite her longstanding popularity as a 90s sensation, veteran singer Noorshila Amin, better known as Mama Shila, continues to defy expectations as she gracefully enters her 60s.

Known for her lively personality, energetic performances, and youthful appearance, Shila remains committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, surprising many with her enduring vitality.

Famous for her hit songs Rambu Ramba and Aku Sudah Jatuh Hati, Shila continues to thrive in the music scene, effortlessly blending genres like R&B, pop, and the lively rhythms of dangdut.

Her vibrant personality and remarkable stamina continue to intrigue her fans, who are eager to uncover the ‘secret’ behind her grace and elegance. As a contestant on Gegar Vaganza season six, Shila still radiates a youthful charm, even in her golden years.

In a recent interview with Bernama, the Negeri Sembilan-born singer revealed that she does not rely on beauty pills, but instead has embraced a healthier lifestyle, focusing on nutritious eating and light exercise for the past four years.

This change, inspired by her belief in the saying 'You are what you eat,' has brought noticeable improvements, leaving her with better health, increased energy, and a happier life.

"‘As you age, you've likely eaten all sorts of things in your younger years. So, I felt it was time to gradually change my eating habits. This year marks the fifth year I've been embracing a healthy lifestyle and diet.

"‘I make sure every meal includes vegetables and traditional herbs, and I avoid eating with belacan (fermented shrimp paste). As for rice, I limit myself to just a handful and make sure to drink at least two litres of water every day,’ she said.

Generously sharing her tips with growing enthusiasm, Noorshila, who was once a singer with the Orkestra Tentera Darat (OTD), also emphasised the importance of morning activities, brisk walking, and fasting on Mondays and Thursdays.

In addition to avoiding late-night meals, she usually goes to bed by 10 pm to ensure she gets enough rest. She believes that lack of sleep makes her feel sluggish, increases the risk of various diseases, and negatively affects the appearance of her skin.

"If we stay up late, our stomachs may start feeling hungry, and we’ll begin looking for food. That’s why it’s important to protect our sleep time. I pray that Allah grants me good health and a long life,” she added, as she prepares for the Konsert Volume 1 Mega Hitz, scheduled for Dec 15.

Excited to perform in the upcoming concert, which will also feature legendary local stars such as Datuk Jamal Abdillah, Man Bai, Ramlah Ram, and Zur Eda, Noorshila also reminisced about some unforgettable moments during her 40 years in the national music industry.

Like many other singers, the ‘loss of voice’ before a performance is their greatest fear, and Noorshila experienced this about 20 years ago when she briefly fell asleep for five minutes.

She recalled the anxiety she felt when her voice disappeared the day before an important performance for the Council of Rulers’ Meeting. She had to lower the pitch of all the songs she was supposed to perform and could only manage to sing four songs.

“At that time, I had received so many performance invitations and had very little rest. I happened to travel from Sarawak straight to Langkawi, and when I arrived, I thought I’d take a short nap. But when I woke up, my voice was gone, and I sounded like a duck," she said.

Not only is her life filled with performances, but Noorshila now also enjoys spending her free time making crystal beaded bags, which she shares on her Instagram, gaining many orders.

"I've always loved knitting and making handbags, and I never expected people would like them. I’ve sold hundreds of units, including in Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. At one point, my hand got so sore from completing an order that I had to undergo surgery,” she said.
