PHNOM PENH, July 2 (Bernama) -- Cambodia and Singapore have pledged to move their 60-year bilateral relationship to new heights that will advance economic prosperity to both nations.

Prime Minister Hun Manet and his visiting Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong agreed to maintain the robust diplomatic relations during talks at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh today.

“The two leaders discussed and agreed on further strengthening and expanding cooperation across a number of key areas.

“In a multilateral framework, the two leaders also discussed and exchanged views on cooperation in regional and international frameworks for the better interest of both countries and people,” said a statement published on the prime minister’s office Facebook page.

The Singapore prime minister was on a one-day trip to Cambodia as both nations will commemorate their 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year.

Both leaders touched on key areas -  trade, investment and finance, people-to-people linkages, national defence and security, agriculture, food and energy security, and skills and vocational training.

Earlier today, Wong also paid a courtesy call to Senate President Hun Sen at the Senate Palace.

During the meeting, Hun Sen proposed that Singapore enhance its flight connectivity to Cambodia as the country prepares to inaugurate its new Techo International Airport, according to a report by Fresh News.

The new airport, located about 30 kilometres south of Phnom Penh, is scheduled to begin operations in September of this year.
