Landslide Hits Bukit Paya Terubong Amid Heavy Rain

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- A landslide occurred at Bukit Paya Terubong in Tingkat Paya Terubong 4 here today, following heavy rain in the area.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Mohd Shoki Hamzah said the incident, which happened at about 2.41 pm, did not result in any injuries or loss of life.

“The landslide is believed to have occurred during the heavy rain this afternoon, causing soil from the hilltop, about 100 metres high, to slide down together with muddy water.

“The landslide caused mud and soil to flow into the parking area of a nearby residential complex, and the situation worsened as the rain continued, leading to water overflowing onto the road,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.

He said initial monitoring at the site indicated that it was a moderate-scale landslide, and the Fire and Rescue Operation Team (PKO) conducted a size-up operation in the affected area.

Shoki said monitoring also showed that the incident did not affect any occupants or nearby structures, but 12 vehicles parked in the area were involved.

He said six of the vehicles had yet to be identified, while the remaining six were moved, with firemen assisting owners to relocate their vehicles to a safer location.

“Subsequently, the PKO installed barriers at the affected site to prevent further incidents, and we also advised residents to remain cautious and follow the authorities’ instructions should evacuation be necessary,” he said.

He added that firemen were still conducting inspections and continuous monitoring at the location as the rain had not stopped.

Earlier, several videos went viral on social media showing soil and muddy water flowing down Bukit Paya Terubong, flooding the parking area, while the heavy rain also caused water to rise on the road nearby.
