KUCHING, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- A total of 44 water and sewerage development projects worth nearly RM6 billion have been approved for implementation in Sarawak under the First Rolling Plan of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) next year, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said the projects comprise 11 new and 33 ongoing initiatives focusing on flood mitigation, river conservation, coastal erosion control, water supply and sewerage systems.

“For 2026, the government has allocated RM195.6 million for water and sewerage projects in the state, an increase of more than 53 per cent compared with 2025,” he said at the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) Sarawak Media Night 2025 here tonight.

He said of the total, 27 projects worth RM172.4 million will be funded by the federal government, while 17 others will be financed through loans amounting to RM23.24 million.

Under the National Flood Mitigation Plan, the government has also allocated RM24.7 billion for flood control projects nationwide, including in Sarawak, to reduce the risks and impacts of flooding on local communities.

Fadillah said the government is also prioritising the implementation of the Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Programme, with an allocation of RM2.5 billion from 2025 to 2030, to replace critical pipelines and reduce water loss nationwide.

“For Sarawak, initiatives such as upgrading the Nyabau Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Bintulu, constructing the Landeh WTP in Kuching and improving rural pipe distribution systems are expected to enhance the efficiency and quality of water supply for the people,” he said.

He said these projects reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening water and sewerage infrastructure to ensure the continued well-being and safety of the people.
