KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 11 (Bernama) — A total of 96 companies are expected to be recognised as smart factories by the end of this year, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).
The ministry said in a reply posted on the parliament website today that the target was based on the progress of several transformation programmes under the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) that have been implemented over the past two years.
According to MITI, the Smart Tech-Up programme, which was introduced in December 2024, has been a key driver for the increase in the number of companies willing to switch to smart production systems.
“As of Oct 24, 2025, 21 factories have been identified as smart factories (under the Smart Tech Up Programme), while 71 of the 196 companies registered in the programme are undergoing various stages of implementation towards transformation into smart factories,” the ministry said.
For the first cohort, MITI targets at least 40 companies to become smart factories by the third quarter of 2026 under the programme.
MITI was replying a question from Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak) who asked the ministry to state the latest achievements of NIMP 2030 after two years of its implementation as well as the number of companies that have switched to automated manufacturing technology and been recognised as smart companies.
Meanwhile, MITI said that under the smart factory recognition programme for manufacturing companies including the automotive sector, a total of five companies have already received smart factory ratings through the recognition programme as of Oct 24, 2025.
The ministry also explained that industrial transformation through NIMP showed consistent progress, including an increase in the manufacturing sector's added value of 3.7 per cent in the second quarter of 2025.
“The number of employees in the manufacturing sector increased by 27,000 people to 2.85 million, while the median salary of workers increased by 5.4 per cent to RM2,490 in 2024,” MITI said.
