SHAH ALAM, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The Selangor government today launched the Selangor Recycling Programme (SELKitar), an initiative aimed at advancing the state’s recycling agenda and strengthening environmental sustainability.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said that as of last October, a total of 77,072 kg of recyclable materials had been collected under the programme across the districts of Sepang, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Kajang, Selayang, Ampang and Hulu Selangor.
He said through collaboration with corporate partners such as Nestlé Malaysia and relevant local authorities (PBT), the programme had successfully reached 412,812 homes and premises across Selangor and that plans were in place to ramp up its collection capacity in the future.
“Next year, we will step up efforts by looking at e-waste while trying to reach all districts and bring on board other strategic partners. I welcome these partners, and we will consider proposals to provide incentives for those involved.
“This is to encourage more parties to participate directly or indirectly in the SELKitar programme,” he said after the SELKitar Launch and Recycling Truck Handover Ceremony here today.
Meanwhile, State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said that KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) had provided 21 lorries to support collection operations and ensure the initiative’s success.
She said that each lorry would, on average, collect recyclables from about 1,500 houses per day.
“This programme focuses on the separation of recyclable materials at the source. It is essential to prevent them from causing pollution, being thrown away, or ending up in landfills.
“Through joint efforts with Media Selangor and KDEBWM, the SELKitar campaign will use the slogan ‘Separate, Return’, a call to ensure that the items we use today are returned for future sustainability,” she said.
The SELKitar programme was first introduced on April 22 and underwent a pilot phase with Nestlé Malaysia in selected housing areas under the Subang Jaya City Council and Sepang Municipal Council before being expanded on Oct 1.
The programme brings recycling services directly to the doorsteps of Selangor residents, with a dedicated collection team, regular schedules, and clear guidelines, making recycling simpler and more effective.
