KUANTAN, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- A male trader lost nearly RM500,000 after allegedly falling victim to a part-time job scam promoted on Facebook in August.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the 61-year-old victim was contacted by an individual posing as a representative of an e-commerce platform and was given a fake link to register as a seller.
He said the victim was instructed to select products supposedly for sale in the European market and was told to bear the upfront costs in return for a 30 per cent commission.
“The victim made several payments totalling more than RM505,000 using Employees Provident Fund savings and personal funds, and initially received over RM8,300 in profits, which convinced him to continue,” Yahaya said in a statement today.
However, further payments were demanded and no additional profits were received, causing the victim to realise he had been deceived and lodge a police report in Bentong, with the case investigated for cheating.
