GEORGE TOWN, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- Police have crippled a drug trafficking syndicate with the arrest of two men and the seizure of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) worth RM347,000 in an integrated operation around the city centre Monday night.
Northeast District Police chief ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the operation, which ended at almost 4 am Tuesday, was conducted by their Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, which earlier conducted intelligence gathering and surveillance within the city.
“Police detained two local men aged 47 and 53 in a car and seized 130 plastic packets containing powdery substance believed to be MDMA, weighing 2.07 kilogrammes and valued at RM347,000,” he said in a statement today.
Abdul Rozak said investigations revealed that the syndicate had been active since October last year, and that the seized drugs could be used by an estimated 6,928 drug abusers.
Both suspects also tested positive for drugs and have previous criminal records related to drug offences.
Abdul Rozak said police also seized three vehicles, cash and a ring, with a total value of RM277,800, bringing the overall value of drugs seized and assets confiscated to RM624,800.
He added that both suspects have been remanded for seven days until Jan 19 for investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
