LKIM Urges Fishermen To Register With Local Associations For Benefits

ARAU, April 3 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) has urged fishermen who have not yet registered with their local Fishermen’s Association to do so, ensuring they do not miss out on welfare benefits.

LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said registration is crucial for maintaining accurate records, enabling various incentives and assistance to be distributed directly and efficiently to ensure the welfare of fishermen and their families.

“Registered fishermen can access aid when needed. Those who are not registered have no official record and may miss out on benefits such as disaster relief, death grants and educational support for their children.

“Beyond LKIM’s assistance, NEKMAT (National Fishermen’s Association) also provides a range of welfare support for fishermen,” he added during the LKIM chairman’s Ziarah Rahmah programme, which honoured outstanding Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 students from fishermen’s families in Kuala Sanglang today.

Among the students recognised was Nur Diana Zahirah Yusni, 18, from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sanglang, who scored 9As.

At the event, Nur Diana Zahirah received RM1,000 in aid from LKIM, while NEKMAT and the Perlis State Fishermen’s Association (PELARIS) each contributed RM500. She also received a food basket from the Southern Perlis Fishermen’s Association.

Muhammad Faiz highlighted that about 80,000 fishermen are currently registered with the associations nationwide, but he believes many more remain unregistered.

He pointed out that the annual membership fee is only RM2, a minimal cost compared with the wide range of welfare benefits available to members.

Muhammad Faiz also assured that LKIM would support Nur Diana Zahirah in pursuing further studies if needed, including covering tuition fees at any higher education institution.
