IPOH, May 15 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Education (MOE) remains committed to addressing transfer applications involving teachers in long-distance relationships (LDR), commonly referred to as ‘duka lara’ cases, as part of efforts to safeguard teachers' welfare.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said teachers living apart from their spouses accounted for the largest share of transfer applications prioritised by the ministry.
She said the ministry had also eased the application process by reducing the minimum service period before teachers can apply for a transfer to two years.
"We do give priority to these applications. In fact, 80 per cent of transfer applications involving teachers in long-distance relationships have been resolved, in addition to other factors such as health," she told reporters after attending the National Teachers' Day 2026 Awards held in conjunction with the National-level Teachers' Day celebration here today.
Meanwhile, Fadhlina said the ministry had filled 50 vacancies for headmasters and principals at schools nationwide.
She said this would ensure that school administration, including safety matters and school reform initiatives, can be carried out efficiently.
"Schools cannot function effectively or build a strong ecosystem without capable administrators. That is why the MOE takes this matter seriously and has moved quickly to fill these vacancies so that issues, including safety, can be addressed promptly," she said.
