GEORGE TOWN, May 15 (Bernama) -- Penang FC head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail described his side’s 2-1 victory over DPMM FC in their final 2025/2026 Super League match today as a special gift for supporters after a challenging season.
He said the result was significant as the Black Panthers had struggled to secure wins in recent matches.
“Alhamdulillah, what we had been waiting for finally came in the last match. Although many chances were not converted, at least we won 2-1, and this victory is for Penang FC supporters,” he said after the match at the City Stadium here.
Reflecting on the season, Wan Rohaimi said Penang FC’s achievement was commendable, given that 95 per cent of the squad consisted of new players.
He said that although the team had a slow start, they managed to improve in the second half of the campaign, finishing eighth in the Super League, while also reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals and becoming Challenge Cup finalists.
On plans for next season, Wan Rohaimi said it was still too early to discuss, and left it to the Penang FC management to evaluate his performance with the team this season.
Meanwhile, DPMM FC head coach Jamie McAllister said his side needed to quickly address weaknesses, particularly in discipline and defence, after individual errors, lapses in concentration and poor decision-making proved costly in George Town.
“I thought it was a bad performance. We were very poor today, especially individually, making so many mistakes and bad decisions. I can’t defend that. The players have got to take responsibility for that performance,” he said.
He also viewed DPMM FC’s first appearance in the Malaysian Super League as an important learning process despite challenges with consistency, injuries and suspensions throughout the season.
He added that next season, DPMM FC would retain several players who performed well and bring in new signings to strengthen the squad in a bid to compete in the top half of the table.
“Next year we’re back stronger. We’ll make better signings and bring in better players because we want to compete and challenge the top half of the table, and that’s what we’ll look to do,” he said.
Earlier, the final match of the season saw Penang FC end an eight-game winless run, finishing eighth with 25 points, while DPMM FC ended in 10th place with 23 points.
