DHAKA, June 1 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi government on Sunday hiked consumer prices for octane, petrol and kerosene, marking the second increase in about six weeks, reported Xinhua.
All except diesel have been increased by five taka each, according to the country's Energy and Mineral Resources Division, which issued a notification on Sunday setting the new rates, effective Monday.
According to the new rates, octane now costs 145 taka (US$1.17) per litre, petrol 140 taka (US$1.13), and kerosene 135 taka (US$1.09), while diesel will remain unchanged at 115 taka (US$0.93).
The division said the prices were revised in line with global fuel oil market fluctuations.
Octane is used to describe the quality of petrol in resisting engine knocking (premature fuel ignition).
Higher octane fuel burns more smoothly under high engine pressure while lower octane fuel is more likely to cause “knocking” in high-performance engines.
