KUCHING, July 17 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2024 in Sarawak is not just a platform for the media to report on sporting events but also a chance for them to narrate the spirit and culture of the local people.

Datuk Abdullah Saidol, the Deputy Minister in the Chief Minister's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and Sarawak Public Communications Unit), said SUKMA 2024 will also serve as a platform for the media to get to know the communities and interesting places in Sarawak.

"This SUKMA is different because the events will be held in nine divisions statewide. So take this opportunity to learn more about Sarawak and its people," he said when attending a briefing by the Media Promotion, Publicity, Broadcast, Printing and Journalism Committee for SUKMA 2024 here today.

Besides Kuching, SUKMA 2024 events will also be held in Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri.

Abdullah also hoped that media coverage during SUKMA would highlight the contributions of individuals or groups who work behind the scenes or are indirectly involved in ensuring the success of the sporting event.

He also called on the committee to continue their excellent efforts as SUKMA 2024 could be a benchmark of Sarawak’s capability to host bigger carnivals.

"SUKMA could set the benchmark for us to identify the challenges should we be entrusted with hosting the SEA Games in 2027," he said.

Meanwhile, Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd (Rapid Bus) will provide 25 buses in conjunction with the Para Malaysia Games (Para SUKMA) 2024 in September.

Sarawak Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the company is the official transport partner for the Para SUKMA.

"The 25 buses will ensure the Para SUKMA athletes’ needs and comfort are taken care of,” she said at the event to show appreciation to SUKMA 2024 sponsors here today.

The Para SUKMA 2024 will be held in Kuching from Sept 22-28, with 10 sports and 334 events contested by an estimated 2,470 athletes.
