02/09/2024 04:02 PM

MOSCOW, Sept 2 (Bernama-Sputnik) -- After the victory of Germany's right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Thuringia and Saxony, Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Monday for the creation of local governments without the leading party, reported Sputnik.

Elections to the state parliaments of Saxony and Thuringia were held on Sunday. Right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) won the elections in Thuringia, receiving 32 of 88 seats in the local parliament (Landtag), and got second place in the elections to the Saxony state parliament, receiving the support of 30.6 per cent  of voters, just behind the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 31.9 per cent.

"The results for the AfD in Saxony and Thuringia are worrying... Our country cannot and must not get used to this. The AfD is damaging Germany. It is weakening the economy, dividing society and ruining our country's reputation," Scholz told Reuters, adding that key parties need to form local governments without the "right-wing extremists".
