KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 (Bernama) -- The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has expressed its delight at the announcement that Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) has received the necessary government backing to advance its proposal to host the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2026.
CGF President Chris Jenkins said the federation has been collaborating with CGS and the Scottish Government for several months and is pleased that the government has confirmed its support which will enable CGS to proceed with its plans for the 2026 Games.
He added that the CGF's £100 million investment, along with £2.3 million from Commonwealth Games Australia, ensures no financial support is needed from the Scottish or UK Governments, showing strong backing for the event.
“We believe Glasgow 2026 will mark an important step in our mission to reset and reframe the Commonwealth Games as a co-created, sustainable event that minimises costs, inspires athletes, and excites both hosts and international federations.
“The CGF will continue to work closely with CGS to finalise stakeholder discussions and hopes to make a formal announcement about Glasgow as the host city for the 2026 Games soon,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Jenkins said CGF also extended its gratitude to Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs), athletes, International Federations, National Governing Bodies, and other stakeholders for their ongoing support and patience.
Previously, Australia pulled out from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games, and both Malaysia and Singapore, who were later offered the opportunity, similarly declined.
