KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Sensational South Korean men’s doubles scratch pair, Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae celebrated a fairy tale ending to their first ever tournament together when they were crowned doubles champions of the Malaysia Open 2025 at Axiata Arena today.
The new 2025 Malaysia Open champions spent one hour and four minutes to defeat Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi in today’s final, coming from behind to with a final result of 19-21, 21-12,21-12.
Seung Jae said he and his partner were happy to secure their first ever Malaysia Open title but was uncertain about how long their partnership will last.
“We don’t know what is going to happen (to) our partnership. It will be decided by our coach later,” he said during the post-match interview.
Won Ho-Seung Jae became the second South Koreans to win a title in the Malaysia Open after their compatriot, women’s singles ace An Se Young defended her crown, beating Wang Zhi Yi of China, 21-17, 21-7, earlier in the day.
The South Koreans were not the only surprises today, as Thailand's new mixed doubles pair, Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran, sprung an upset against first seeds Feng Yang Zheng-Huang Dong Ping of China, in a thrilling rubber game, winning 21-13, 19-21, 21-18 to claim their first Malaysia Open title.
Dechapol was estatic to have finally won the title after coming close in 2022 when he and then partner Sapsiree Taerattanachai lost to Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong 21-13, 21-18.
“I am very happy I can do it this time. We try our best to win this title,” he said.
Meanwhile, in the women's doubles event, Japanese pair Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto also had to dig deep to beat Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian 17-21, 21-15, 21-15.
Fukushima, who won the title in 2017 with her former partner Sayaka Hirota, said she was glad to achieve her goal of securing her second Malaysia Open title.
