WASHINGTON, Jan 21 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump, in his inaugural address on Monday, announced a national emergency at the southern border and introduced a policy recognising only two genders.

"I will declare a national emergency at our southern border," Trump said at the US Capitol Rotunda, vowing to reinstate the Remain-in-Mexico policy and deploy troops to stop what he called a "disastrous invasion."

He also said cartels would be designated as Foreign Terrorist Organisations.

Trump further declared that his administration will formally recognise only two genders as part of official government policy.

"As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the US government that there are only two genders, male and female," he added.

In addition to his domestic policies, Trump outlined an ambitious vision for space exploration, pledging to send US astronauts to Mars.

"The US will once again consider itself a growing nation, one that increases our wealth, expands our territory, builds our cities, raises our expectations and carries our flag into new and beautiful horizons, and we will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the stars and stripes on the planet Mars," he said.

Trump took his oath as the 47th president of the US in Washington, DC on Monday.

The inauguration ceremony began at 11.45 am local time (EST) at the Capitol Rotunda.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden greeted Trump and his wife, Melania, as they arrived at the White House.
