KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- Two local women have been detained following the discovery of a deceased infant outside a Petaling Jaya baby shelter in Jalan Bukit Gasing yesterday, police said.
The suspects, both in their 20s, were arrested after police received a report at 8.10 am that day, according to Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Shamsudin Mamat.
He said post-mortem examination confirmed the infant was stillborn and had died more than 24 hours before being found.
"Acting on a tip-off and following further investigations, we detained the two suspects who have no prior criminal records and seized several items linked to the case," he said in a statement today.
According to Shamsudin, the first suspect has been remanded for two days and the second for three days until June 15 to assist with investigations.
He said the suspects face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both if convicted under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing a birth by secretly abandoning a child's body.
Witnesses or anyone with information on the incident has been urged to come forward to the nearest station or call the Petaling Jaya district police operations room at 03-79662222.
