IPOH, June 19 (Bernama) -- About 240 homes in seven residential areas around Anjung Bercham here were damaged after a storm accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds lasting nearly 90 minutes this afternoon.

In a statement, the Kinta Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) said the incident occurred at 3.47 pm based on information received from the penghulu of Ulu Kinta sub-district (Tanjung Rambutan).

Following the report, three APM personnel were deployed to monitor the affected areas.

The affected locations were Dataran Tasek Timur 6, involving an estimated 177 homes; Hala Tasek Timur 1 and Lorong Bercham 19, with 22 homes each; Hala Tasek Timur 34 (10 homes); Laluan Tasek Timur 15 (five homes); and Lintasan Tasek Timur 1 and Lintasan Tasek Timur 3, with two homes each.

The statement said Ipoh City Council (MBI) also deployed a team to the affected areas at 5.05 pm to carry out clean-up works, including clearing fallen trees that were obstructing roads and posing safety risks to residents.

The incident also caused several electricity poles to collapse in residential areas and along roads, prompting Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to temporarily cut power supply to the affected areas as a safety precaution.

Meanwhile, Dewan Datuk Ahmad Said has been placed on standby as a temporary relief centre if needed, while the Kinta district officer has instructed all relevant agencies to remain prepared for any eventuality.

Meanwhile, the Operations Control Centre said continuous heavy rain lasting about one-and-a-half hours caused flash floods in Kampung Tanjung, Simpang Pulai, affecting an estimated 60 houses.

It said a call was received from the village head at 7.56 pm requesting the agency to conduct flood monitoring in the affected area.

“It is currently drizzling and water levels are showing a downward trend and continue to recede,” it said in a statement.

No temporary relief centre has been opened so far, it said.
