PETRONAS LAUNCHES PROTOUGH+ TO ADVANCE LOW-CARBON SOLUTIONS IN COMPONENTS MANUFACTURING

KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) -- Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has launched its third graphene-based solution, ProTough+ to capture new growth opportunities in line with its Energy Transition Strategy.

ProTough+ is an additive that enhances the strength of composite materials by improving their mechanical properties to achieve component lightweighting, which is key in the manufacturing and delivery of lower carbon solutions such as hydrogen mobility. 

In a statement today, the national oil company announced that ProTough+ has demonstrated the ability to enhance carbon fiber reinforced polymers by up to 35 per cent in tensile strength in a recent test.

“This allows stronger composite parts to be manufactured with less materials, thus supporting fabrication of products that are lighter and more economical," it said.

Petronas Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Dr Mahpuzah Abai said the development of ProTough+ demonstrates Petronas's commitment to providing better solutions that enhance operations, address business pain points, and create value towards supporting sustainability practices.

Meanwhile, during the launch of ProTough+ at the Advanced Materials Show in Birmingham, United Kingdom, Petronas Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd (PTVSB) and HyPerComp Engineering Inc. have signed an agreement to conduct additional performance tests for potential deployment of the solution.

Under the joint development agreement, the parties will look into incorporating ProTough+ into the manufacturing process of composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs).

“We are confident that the outcome of our joint development would offer the competitive edge that meets the needs of our stakeholders and customers,” Mahpuzah said.
