KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) – Southpoint, a port facility in Port Klang operated by Northport Malaysia Bhd, has recorded a cargo handling volume of 297,337 tonnes in May 2024, up 59.1 per cent from May 2023.

This new record surpassed its previous record of 289,826 tonnes set in August 2001, Northport, a port operator and member of MMC Group, said in a statement today.

Northport chief executive officer Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof said the increase in cargo handling, especially in dry bulk, highlights the success of their strategic initiatives, including the Biomass Logistics Hub at Southpoint.

The port handled a record-high 105.8 per cent increase in dry bulk cargo, totalling 147,545 tonnes in May this year compared with the same month last year.

There was also an increase in liquid bulk (42.1 per cent) and a rise in breakbulk cargo (7.3 per cent) volumes, while biomass materials, especially palm kernel shell, surged to 84,415 tonnes, marking a 193.0 per cent year-over-year increase.

Southpoint also recorded significant increases in the volume of palm oil (76,469 tonnes) and coal (63,130) handled, the port operator said.
