FACTORY OPERATOR CHARGED WITH FATAL DRUNK DRIVING

JOHOR BAHRU, June 20 (Bernama) -- A factory operator pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here today to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol which resulted in the death of a teen boy last Sunday.

L. Satish Kumar, 25, was charged with driving a Mitsubishi Xpander with a blood alcohol content of 173 milligrammes per 100 millilitres, causing the death of motorcyclist Mohamad Hafizul Hafizzudin, 17, at Km 41 Jalan Johor Bahru-Gelang Patah-Pendas here, at 12.15 am on June 16.

The charge, framed under Section 44(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 carries a maximum jail term of 15 years and a fine of up to RM100,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving license for up to 10 years, if convicted.

Magistrate A. Shaarmini allowed the accused bail of RM7,000 with one surety and fixed July 23 for remention.

Prosecution officer from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department of the Royal Malaysia Police Insp S. Vikineswary prosecuted, while the accused was represented by R. Sangaran.
