KOTA BHARU July 10 (Bernama) -- A married couple was detained by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) yesterday for allegedly attempting to smuggle petrol in a modified tank in a raid at Kampung Dusun Langgar near Wakaf Bharu, Tumpat.

Kelantan KPDN director Azman Ismail said a team of enforcement officers discovered the couple, aged 31 and 33, during surveillance.

They were believed to be filling petrol into a Perodua Kenari’s modified tank intended for smuggling into a neighbouring country.

"The enforcement team then followed the car and found it parked in front of a house in Kampung Dusun Langgar, Wakaf Bharu, Tumpat, at 11 am," he said in a statement today.

Azman said an inspection of the car found the modified fuel tank containing 75 litres of petrol, which exceeded its original capacity.

"The suspects admitted to having approximately 75 litres of petrol in the modified tank, intended for smuggling across the border through illegal bases or riverbanks," he said.

Azman stated that the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, with the estimated value of the seized petrol and vehicle totaling RM5,175.
