KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is continuously enhancing its operational capabilities, technology and strategic cooperation to tackle the increasingly complex global maritime challenges, said its director-general Maritime Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah.

In an exclusive interview ahead of MMEA’s 20th anniversary tomorrow, Mohd Rosli outlined several key pillars under his leadership to safeguard the safety and sovereignty of Malaysia’s Maritime Zone.

“We are committed to strengthening our operational capabilities through investments in modern assets such as high-tech patrol vessels, integrated monitoring systems, drones and artificial intelligence to enhance surveillance efficiency,” he told Bernama.

He also stressed that human capital development remains a priority to ensure MMEA personnel are equipped to handle evolving challenges.

“Continuous training, professional development and recognition of young talents are essential in empowering our officers to be more competitive and capable,” he said.

In addition, Mohd Rosli said the agency would continue to strengthen diplomatic ties and international cooperation through joint training, information sharing and strategic agreements with neighbouring countries and global organisations.

“As a maritime agency in a strategically positioned nation, regional cooperation is crucial in combating transnational crimes, smuggling and territorial intrusions,” he said.

He also stressed the need for MMEA to remain vigilant against emerging threats, such as cyberattacks on maritime security systems and the evolving modus operandi of maritime crimes.

“Criminal syndicates are also leveraging technology to refine their operations. Therefore, MMEA personnel must stay alert to these changes,” he said.

Mohd Rosli also highlighted the agency’s commitment to marine conservation efforts, including combating maritime pollution and supporting biodiversity preservation to ensure the sustainability of marine resources that serve as a key food source for the people.

At the same time, Mohd Rosli said the effective enforcement of maritime laws with integrity would remain a core mission of MMEA in safeguarding national waters.

“I also aspire to position MMEA as a world-class maritime enforcement agency -- one that is respected internationally and serves as a benchmark for other nations in ensuring regional maritime security,” he said.

He added that these efforts align with the MMEA Strategic Plan 2023-2033 and the Malaysian Maritime Strategic Plan 2040, which serve as key guidelines for maintaining the agency’s global standing.

“With these initiatives, I am confident that MMEA will continue to uphold national maritime security, contributing to long-term stability and prosperity in the region,” he said.
