KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail has called on the media to act as catalysts for unity and raise public awareness on the shared responsibility of defending national sovereignty.
He said the media not only delivers news but also plays a crucial role in wisely handling conflicts and security issues, as well as promoting community well-being by disseminating information accurately and responsibly.
“The media’s responsibility is not just to passively observe and seek news content for profit alone. Instead, the media is a vital platform to uphold community consensus and well-being, to address conflicts and security matters, and to build public awareness towards the shared responsibility of safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty,” he said.
Mohd Khalid said this in his speech at the IGP Media Appreciation Gathering 2025 held at the Bukit Aman Senior Officers’ Mess here today, which was attended by over 30 media practitioners, including Bernama News Service executive editor Mohd Haikal Mohd Isa.
Mohd Khalid, who was appointed as the 15th IGP just 40 days ago, also described the strong cooperation between the media and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) as a key pillar in maintaining national peace and stability collectively.
Mohd Khalid said that in an era of rapid information technology and artificial intelligence development, transparent, accurate and ethical information delivery is crucial, as the public is now more aware of their rights and security.
He also urged media practitioners to avoid sensationalising current issues, especially those related to religion, race and the royal institution, which could provoke tension and threaten national unity.
“The media must prioritise racial harmony and national peace by refraining from sensationalising current issues, pitting political parties against each other, and raising matters that could trigger political instability and disrupt public well-being,” he said.
Mohd Khalid said PDRM remains committed to practising openness in sharing official information through legitimate channels, while strengthening integrity, transparency and accountability in all actions.
“With transparent and professional communication, we can prevent misleading speculation and maintain public trust in national institutions,” he said.
