SHAH ALAM, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Four individuals, including a senior citizen, were rescued after being trapped in a shophouse fire at Taman Sentosa, Klang, this morning, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director of Operations, Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar, said the victims — aged between 17 and 81 — were trapped after thick smoke blocked the staircase. The fire had broken out on the first floor of the three-storey building.

“The fire, which occurred on the first floor of the shophouse measuring 20 by 30 square feet, destroyed about 50 per cent of the premises.

“All four local victims, comprising a man, two women and a teenage girl, who were trapped on the third floor, were rescued and evacuated from the building,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the fire was brought under control at 6.16 a.m. with the deployment of 14 firefighters and officers from the Andalas, South Klang and North Klang fire and rescue stations.
