KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is tracking down an individual believed to have sent threatening messages to an employee at the Petronas liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Bintulu, Sarawak, yesterday.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk M. Kumar said his department is currently in the process of identifying the owner of the phone number used to send the short message service (SMS) threat.

“Efforts are underway to track down the sender of the threat. From a security perspective, controls at the location will continue to be enhanced throughout the operation.

“The investigation is still ongoing as the phone number used to send the message is being identified,” he said when met at the 6th National Forensic Science Symposium for Law Enforcement (NAFSLE) here today.

Yesterday, the media reported that the government had directed all LNG facilities in Bintulu to immediately tighten security following the received threats.

The National Security Council (MKN), in a statement, said the move was aimed at enabling immediate investigations into the threats.

Meanwhile, a total of 280 participants, including investigating officers, academics, and forensic experts from various enforcement agencies, are attending NAFSLE, which runs from today until Thursday under the theme ‘Science Meets Justice: Powered by AI.’

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the symposium serves as a key platform for sharing scientific knowledge, skills, expertise, and forensic technology, particularly to tackle the challenges posed by an increasingly complex criminal landscape.

“This symposium focuses on dialogue sessions and the sharing of ideas on forensic science innovations, particularly in adapting Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology within the country’s criminal justice system.

“With the participation of scholars, practitioners, and forensic experts from various departments and institutions, it has a significant impact in strengthening investigations, prosecutions, and law enforcement operations,” he said this in his speech when officiating the symposium here today.

He said that modern and sophisticated forensic technology facilities are crucial to ensure law enforcement agencies can keep pace with increasingly complex criminal methods at the global level.

NAFSLE, which has been organised since 2019, is an initiative of the Bukit Aman CID, with organisation rotated between the Forensic Laboratory Division (D10) and the DNA Databank Division (D13).

Ayob Khan also expressed hope that the symposium could be fully utilised to enhance the law enforcement service delivery system, thereby ensuring the well-being of the community and safeguarding the country’s sovereignty.

Apart from Kumar, also present at the opening ceremony were Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Azman Abdullah and Shah Alam High Court Judge Adlin Abdul Majid.
