JPJ To Probe Alleged Unauthorised Transfer Of Vehicle Registration Number

GEORGE TOWN, April 17 (Bernama) -- The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will investigate a claim by an individual that his company’s vehicle registration number was transferred without authorisation.

JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the department takes the matter seriously and will investigate the allegation and take action based on existing procedures and legal provisions.

“It cannot be denied that previously there have been several complaints received regarding the transfer of ownership without the original owner’s consent.

“Action is taken from time to time whenever complaints are made, carried out in accordance with current procedures and laws,” he told reporters at a press conference during the launch of the Special Registration Number in conjunction with JPJ’s 80th anniversary at The Top Komtar here today.

Earlier, a businessman in the car rental sector claimed that the registration number of his company’s Toyota Alphard was transferred without authorisation after it had been rented out to an agent last January.

The vehicle, which bears the popular and unique registration number P111, was allegedly taken to a used car showroom in Puchong, Selangor without his knowledge. He also claimed that several of his friends who collect unique vehicle registration numbers have faced similar situations.

Aedy Fadly stressed that JPJ is committed to assisting owners but must examine each case in detail before taking any action to ensure decisions are based on facts and the law.

“This is because some claims may not be accurate, including situations where owners believe the registration number still belongs to them when, in fact, the transfer was carried out legally,” he said.

Commenting on the possibility of internal involvement, he did not rule it out but stressed that a thorough investigation must first be conducted, and each case will be reviewed individually before any conclusions are made.

Meanwhile, regarding a viral video involving a bus driver allegedly driving dangerously in Melaka, he said the department needs to examine the case first. Investigations are usually conducted together with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), as cases involving criminal elements will be handled by the police, while JPJ will look into matters related to road transport that do not involve criminal elements.

Yesterday, Alor Gajah police chief Superintendent Ahmad Abu Bakar said police are actively tracking down the individual. Initial investigations found that the bus was travelling from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru, and the incident is believed to have occurred at KM196.1 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) southbound.

Based on the footage, the express bus driver was seen driving in a reclined position and using only one hand to control the steering wheel while the vehicle was moving at night.
