James Chai Completes Giving Statement To MACC

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has completed recording the statement of former aide to the Economy Minister, Chai Jin Shern, also known as James Chai, in connection with an investigation involving leading semiconductor firm Arm Holdings Plc. 

MACC senior investigations director Datuk Mohd Hafaz Nazar confirmed that the process concluded at about 9 pm today, marking the third consecutive day of questioning.

“The recording of his statement, which entered its third day today, will not be continued for now,” he said when contacted here.

James Chai, who is also a political analyst, arrived at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at 10 am today. 

The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 in relation to a government-funded semiconductor project valued at RM1.1 billion.

MACC opened the investigation paper on Feb 16 following complaints from several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), which alleged that the project agreement was rushed and skewed, potentially resulting in financial implications for the government.

On April 1, MACC gave James Chai, who was then in London, two weeks to return and assist in the investigation, with the commission offering to cover his travel expenses to Malaysia.

The probe is also focusing on the possibility of a conflict of interest involving several individuals who were allegedly appointed to senior positions in the foreign company after leaving their posts in a ministry.
