DOF URGED TO USE 999, WhatsApp SERVICE AS PUBLIC INFO CHANNELS

KUALA TERENGGANU -- The Fisheries Department (DOF) has been urged to consider using the WhatsApp app or the 999 emergency line to simplify the relaying of information related to the discovery of turtles in the country.

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS), External Research Laboratory head Mr Mohd Uzair Rusli said the use of apps and emergency numbers are seen as more practical for the public to use compared with official telephone numbers being used by the DOF presently.

He said not everyone knew that turtles were under the jurisdiction of the department and every discovery that was either dead or alive must be reported to it.

“Many of the discoveries were only uploaded on the social media and only then will there be follow-up action to manage the turtles, which normally take a long time.

“If the turtle found by the public is still alive, then every moment is precious and we need to be able to save the lives of the endangered animals," he said in a statement today.

KPDNHEP WILL NOT COMPROMISE WITH THOSE MANIPULATING CHICKEN PRICES - ROSOL

JOHOR BAHRU -- The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) has said it will not compromise with traders who manipulate chicken prices by selling it higher than the maximum price.

Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Rosol Wahid issued the statement after receiving complaints that traders were selling standard chickens above RM8.90 a kilogramme (kg).

“I have instructed enforcement to monitor the situation because I have received reports they (the traders) were doing this (selling chicken above the fixed price) not secretly but openly selling at RM12 or RM13 a kilogramme.

"This is clearly higher than our control price of RM8.90, so we took action and issued compounds. But more importantly, we would like to know why this happened….they say the traders are getting their supply at a higher price, how is it possible to sell them lower. That was the reason given, and we will investigate,” he said at a press conference after launching the Johor state Franchise Bay Roadshow 2022 at Angsana Johor Bahru Mall here today.

He was asked to comment on reports that traders were selling chicken higher than the maximum price.

OUM TO WORK WITH MFH IN CREATING SPECIAL FINANCIAL FUND FOR STUDENTS

MELAKA  -- The Open University Malaysia (OUM) plans to collaborate with the state government through Melaka Finance House Berhad (MFH) to create a special fund to assist Melaka-born students in furthering their studies at the university level.

METEOR Sdn Bhd group chief executive officer  Muhammad Afiq Redzuan said the move would indirectly assist the state government to produce more highly-skilled workers, especially in the post Covid-19 pandemic period.

“As OUM’s holding company, we find that there are many quality workers in Melaka but unfortunately, highly-skilled workers are getting lesser. So it is important for us to help those born in Melaka to learn new skills or upgrade their skills at OUM.

"As such, we hope to strike up a collaboration through the Melaka-owned financial company," he said when met at a Hari Raya Celebration event organised by the company for the south zone OUM learning centre here today.

Meanwhile OUM Vice-Chancellor Associate Prof Dr Ahmad Izanee Awang said OUM is now actively marketing its education programme overseas in a move to attract more international students to learn at the university.
